Mac: Screen Capture Settings

This is in response to a user asking how to change the file type that OS X outputs when using the command + shift + 3 or command + shift + 4 (with or without the spacebar after) in Tiger.

Launch Terminal, and depending on what file type you want outputted, type (or copy and paste) the appropriate line below followed by return:

defaults write type pdf
defaults write type png
defaults write type jpg
defaults write type tif

To change the default save location:

defaults write location /Full/Path/To/Folder

Enter this into the terminal.. and change the /Full/Path/To/Folder to the folder that you want it to go to.

hint: While in the terminal, if you drag a folder into the window.. it writes the location
